‘Place Based Heritage Education’ in Lake Arthur, LA!

  2009 < > 2018

WHOM:  Pastor, Principal, Teachers, Students, Parents and Grandparents of Rayne Catholic, Rayne, LA., Redemptorist Catholic, Crowley, LA., Sacred Heart Catholic, Ville Platte, LA, St. Francis Catholic, Iota, LA, St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic School, Lake Charles, LA, St. Peter Catholic, Gueydan, LA.

WHAT:  “Place Based Heritage Education” experience is designed to heighten the desire to be of service because of a strengthened bond with family heritage, one’s faith and knowledge of one’s community. The myriad of areas covered in the curriculum include: Social Studies, History, Language Arts, Reading, English, Writing, Art, Civics and Citizenship.

HOW:  These particular units emphasize two venues of learning:

Group One in the home for one hour and Group Two will be in the public library for one hour… then switch!

1)      ‘Heritage Tour’ of an Ancestral Home of Origin built in 1904.

Anna ‘Bernadette’ Monlezun-Pontón, Caretaker of this ‘Heritage Home’ which is co-owned by her eldest and youngest brothers, encapsulates the theme “The Spirituality and Work of Heritage:  Reverencing Those Who Have Gone Before!” Many Special Collections, artifacts and displays are viewed throughout this unique and historical two-story home depicting ‘Heritage Walls and Rooms’ through their paternal and maternal lineages since 1600!

2)       “My Piece of History” Public Library across the boulevard from the home.

Renee A. Reina, M.Ed. guides the children through processes of thought (and heart!):

Exhibiting a precious object of the past; what can precious things teach us about the past? Why do we keep them and why are they important to us as they grow in meaning over the years?! The children in turn share their artifact from memory discussing its origin, ownership, use and value to the child!

“What is your full name and that of your parents and grandparents?” A Family Tree is begun as the children write their family lineage discovering family names; they thrill to see ‘their’ names repeated as they go ‘up’ the line of their ancestors. Both the parents and children are encouraged to continue their family search by visiting genealogical libraries.

The children are able to apply the lessons they have learned and reviewed at their schools by discussing ‘heritage’ vocabulary: paternal and maternal lineage, artifacts, genealogy, memorabilia, country of origin, ‘the old home place’, ancestry, descendants, legacy, necrology…

3)      After a class photo in the vintage Red Ford Truck the children (& an adult!) are driven down Main Street to the park for a wonderful picnic on the lake with lots of room to run, safely!

All return to school wholelistically satiated!
